Peticure Treatment

How often should I give my dog a pedicure?

An essential part of your dog’s grooming routine is to keep the nails in a respectable condition. Dogs need to have their nails clipped and filed every three to four weeks, to protect themselves and their owner from any unnecessary scratches.

By not sticking to this timeline, you could be putting your dog at risk of health issues. Too much unattended growth can result in painful ingrown nails, while elongated nails can cause discomfort. As a result, your dog might find it difficult to place their full body weight on their feet.

What tools do I need to give my dog a pedicure?

Firstly, you will need a pair of nail clippers, to enable you to trim the nails. It is also helpful to have clotting powder to hand, as accidentally cutting too much of your dog's nail off, could cause excessive bleeding. Throughout the grooming process, you can provide treats for your dog to reinforce positive behaviour. If you feel out of your depth clipping your dog's nails for the first time, then you can go to a groomer or vet to get professional advice.

How do I give my dog a pedicure?

Giving your dog a pedicure is a simple process. To begin with, lift and angle the paw so that you can place the nail clipper on the edge of the nail. Then, cut off small sections until the nail has been trimmed down to a reasonable length. Repeat this process on each nail, including the dew claws. Since dew claws are above the other nails, they are never exposed to friction from ground surfaces, meaning they are often longer and sometimes overgrown.

What are the benefits of trimming your dog’s nails?

Trimming your dog’s nails on a regular basis, leads to a healthier, happier dog, allowing them to walk, run and move around comfortably. This simple process means your dog can avoid a whole host of serious health issues, as well as frequent trips to the vets.

How long should my dog’s nails be?

Your dog’s nails should extend enough, so that you can see them, however, they should not go past the paw. In the instance that your dog has long hair, you may not be able to easily see the nails. Although, if the nails extend over the bottom of the paw pad, then you will know your dog’s nails are too long. Extremely overgrown dog nails will curl over the paw. This is when you will probably have to let a groomer or vet trim the nails down to a reasonable length. To ensure your dog’s long-lasting comfort, you should regularly maintain your dog’s nails.
